Breakfast in America is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released on 29 March 1979 by A&M Records. It was recorded in 1978 at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. It spawned four U.S. Billboard hit singles: “The Logical Song” (No. 6), “Goodbye Stranger” (No. 15), “Take the Long Way Home” (No. 10) and “Breakfast in America” (No. 62). In the UK, “The Logical Song” and the title track were both top 10 hits, the only two the group had in their native country.

Breakfast in America won two Grammy Awards in 1980, and holds an RIAA certification of quadruple platinum. Breakfast in America became Supertramp’s biggest-selling album with more than 6 million copies sold in the US alone and was No. 1 on Billboard Pop Albums Chart for six weeks in the spring and summer of 1979. The album also hit No. 1 in Norway, Austria, Canada, Australia and France, where it is one of the five biggest selling albums of all time.

With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp’s earlier records weren’t as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.” Supertramp still had a tendency to indulge themselves occasionally, but Breakfast in America had very few weak moments. It was clearly their high-water mark.

In the fall of 1969, Van Morrison entered the studio to record Moondance, the album that would soon become his commercial breakthrough and one of the most beloved recordings of all time. Fans will soon have the rare opportunity to experience this classic album like never before with the newly remastered and expanded version featuring 50 unreleased tracks including studio outtakes of favorites, plus multiple takes and a final mix of the unheard track “I Shall Sing.”
The Deluxe Edition includes 4 CDs/1 Blu-Ray Audio with newly remastered version of the original album, three discs of previously unreleased music from the sessions, a Blu-Ray Audio disc with high-resolution 48K 24 bit PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound audio of original album (no video). The package is presented in a linen-wrapped folio Includes a booklet with liner notes from Alan Light and original engineer Elliot Scheiner.
The Deluxe Edition unearths an amazing trove of unreleased gems that take the listener right alongside Morrison and his band in studio. There are multiple, often lengthy, takes from the recording sessions of nearly every track found on the 1970 original, including “Glad Tidings,” “Brand New Day” and “Come Running.” There are also early takes of “I’ve Been Working,” a song that would appear later that year on His Band And The Street Choir. The early version included here is quite different from the official album version. The Deluxe Edition also includes a Blu-Ray audio disc with high-resolution stereo and surround mixes of the original album, mixed by original engineer Elliot Scheiner, who also oversaw the new re-mastering of the album.
One of the most significant revelations is “I Shall Sing,” a Morrison original that was completed but left off the album. There are multiple takes of the song (spread across six tracks), plus a final mix of the finished song. While no one has heard Morrison’s version, Art Garfunkel had a Top 40 hit with the song, which appeared on his 1973 solo debut.

Maroon 5’s latest provides a sonic summation of the group’s journey to date – capturing the essence of the earliest M5 hits through to their most recent successes, as well as providing a picture of its artistic growth into the future. Bringing it all back home, V features the return of M5’s original keyboardist Jesse Carmichael to the fold, rejoining frontman Adam Levine, guitarist James Valentine, bassist Mickey Madden, drummer/percussionist Matt Flynn, and keyboardist PJ Morton after a two-year hiatus. The group’s fifth studio album features singles “Maps” and “Animals”.

It wasn’t noted much at the time, but founding keyboardist Jesse Carmichael sat out Maroon 5’s 2012 album Overexposed — a circumstance that just happened to coincide with Adam Levine capitalizing on his Voice-fueled stardom. Overexposed and over-filled with guest producers and songwriters drafted to compensate for the absent Carmichael, rapper Wiz Khalifa, reliable Swedish hitmakers Max Martin & Shellback, and icy OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder gave the group a steely sleekness to suit contemporary charts. Some of this is retained on V, the 2014 record that marks Carmichael’s return to the group, partially because all those guests save Khalifa return for a second helping. The absence of the rapper suggests Maroon 5 aren’t quite as concerned with sounding youthful as they were last time around, which is generally true. Some tracks maintain the glossy veneer that overwhelmed Overexposed — not entirely a surprise with Martin billed as the record’s executive producer — and, despite some unnecessary vocal processing on Levine scattered throughout the record, these are largely the ones featuring returning guests: Tedder co-writes and co-produces the album’s lead single, “Maps,” a song where Levine’s Sting mannerisms steamroll the hooks,” while Shellback helms “Animals,” “In Your Pocket,” and “Feelings,” with all but the last placing emphasis on brittle beats. Elsewhere, the vibe shifts slightly back to the soulful pop that’s remained at Maroon 5’s core since the beginning, here given an ever so slight maturation to balance the modern moves heard on the rest of the record. Sometimes, the group achieves a delicate balance between the two extremes — “It Was Always You,” “New Love,” and the aforementioned “Feelings” — but the best moments on V are when Maroon 5 embrace the tuneful, slightly soulful adult contemporary pop band they’ve always been, as they do on “Sugar,” “Coming Back for You,” and the Gwen Stefani duet “My Heart Is Open.” –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

One of the best live albums of all time is about to get considerably better. The Allman Brothers Band’s cornerstone LP, At Fillmore East, compiled from the four sets recorded on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971. Additionally, The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings contains the complete June 27 performance during the iconic venue’s final weekend, after the band was handpicked by impresario Bill Graham to headline closing night. Produced by Bill Levenson, who compiled the definitive Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective (Rounder, 2013), The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings captures the most inspired improvisational rock unit ever at the peak of their prodigious powers, blazing their way through extended instrumental elaborations, so taut and virtuosic, that the crowds that packed the Fillmore East on those memorable nights were utterly transfixed. When it came to live performance, no other band could touch the Allmans.

In his scrupulously detailed notes for the set, Allmanologist John Lynskey writes: “From its inception in March 1969, the Allman Brothers Band rapidly established a near-mythical reputation through its incendiary, marathon concerts. No other group could touch the Allman Brothers when it came to extended, improvised jamming; they truly were in a league and dimension of their own. Duane Allman was joined by his brother Gregg on keyboards and vocals, the dual drumming combo of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, bassist extraordinaire Berry Oakley, and Dickey Betts, Duane’s foil on guitar. Together, these individually talented artists blended into a unit whose sum exceeded the total of its impressive singular parts. The group toured relentlessly—they spent 300 days on the road in 1970, honing their sound and building a loyal fan base, one show at a time. An Allman Brothers’ concert could not be explained, it could only be experienced, and by word of mouth, the group became known as ‘the people’s band’ for their no-frills approach to live music.”
As Lynskey notes, the Allman Brothers Band’s magic has always existed primarily on the concert stage, but on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971, when they rolled into Manhattan to play four shows at the iconic East Village venue, they raised the bar higher than ever. “That weekend in March of ‘71 when we recorded At Fillmore East, most of the time it clicked,” drummer Butch Trucks recalls. “We were finally starting to catch up with what we were listening to. We had lived together…we got in trouble together; we all just moved as a unit. And then, when we got onstage to play, that’s what it was all about—and it just happened to all come together that weekend.”
The four shows were recorded by veteran Atlantic Records engineer/producer Tom Dowd, who’d not only produced the Allmans’ second album, Idlewild South, but also the sessions for Derek & the Dominos project, putting Duane Allman together with Eric Clapton for some mind-blowing extended guitar duels. That album, Layla, dramatically backed up those who’d been calling the upstart Allman Brothers Band the most exciting live act on the planet, and its little-known 24-year-old leader a fiery six-string virtuoso to rival Clapton, Beck and Page. Dowd and Atlantic, consequently, wanted to put out a live album to capture a skilled and adventurous band in full flight, the two guitars circling each other like a pair of falcons, stretching their material into thrilling and electrifying shapes. No matter that the Allmans had yet to tackle most of their live material in the studio—this band wasn’t about the studio.
“If we could just get people to come out and see us,” Duane Allman told interviewer Bud Scoppa on the afternoon of Friday, March 12, before their first pair of headlining sets, “I know they’d like what they heard.”

UK prog rockers Gentle Giant‘s fourth album, Octopus has been remixed (in part) by Steven Wilson for an expanded CD+Blu-ray audio reissue. The new edition of the 1972 album sees Wilson remix five of the eight tracks for stereo and 5.1 surround sound (this is due to missing multi-tracks). The remaining three tracks (Advent of Panurge, Raconteur Troubadour and The Boys in the Band) are the original stereo remixes on the CD and on the blu-ray have been processed through Penteo upmix software for 5.1 surround sound. Steven did this for Broken on Tears For Fears‘ Songs From The Big Chair, if you remember. Both discs also include a bonus track of a 16 minute live version of Extracts from Octopus, again newly mixed into stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
As well as the album tracks in 96/24 Stereo LPCM & DTS 5.1 Master Audio, the blu-ray element of this set contains a flat transfer of the original 1972 mix, and instrumental versions of the five stereo remixes, all in high resolution.

Following the highly successful releases of the Steven Wilson remixes of ‘The Power And The Glory’ and ‘Octopus’, Steven has now remixed a specially curated selection of songs and compositions from the band’s first three albums (Giant, Acquiring the Taste, Three Friends) presented in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo. Only a few songs from each of the band’s first three albums are known to exist as multi-tracks, with the rest presumably lost, and it is these nine tracks – plus the previously unreleased pre-debut song ‘Freedom’s Child’ – that have been remixed by Steven Wilson for this very special release.

‘Three Piece Suite’ includes the songs ‘Giant’, ‘Nothing At All’ and ‘Why Not’ from the first album ‘Giant’; ‘Pantagruel’s Nativity’, ‘The House, The Street, The Room’ from the second album ‘Acquiring The Taste’; and ‘Schooldays’, ‘Peel the Paint’, ‘Mr. Class And Quality’ and ‘Three Friends’ from the album ‘Three Friends’. The previously commercially unreleased song ‘Freedom’s Child’ is from the first recording sessions with legendary producer Tony Visconti. The liner notes contain an essay by noted journalist Anil Prasad, in which Gentle Giant’s members reflect upon the writing and recording sessions. Furthermore, Steven Wilson and Tony Visconti share their observations about the early days of this unique collection of timeless music from one of progressive rock’s most influential bands.

Tony Visconti: “I was a very optimistic young man in 1970… I thought music like theirs would save the world from mediocrity. I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth in it.”

Steven Wilson: “There was never a question of trying to outdo the original mixes, but offer different perspectives on them.”

This Blu-Ray + CD Digipak contains the new Steven Wilson mixes both in 96/24 PCM and in DTS 5.1 Surround Sound Master Audio. The Blu-ray also includes animated videos for the Steven Wilson mixes, instrumental mixes of all tracks, as well as flat transfers of all three complete albums in their original mixes.

A brand new mix in both high resolution stereo and 5.1 surround sound of this classic album from one of the most gifted and ambitious but perhaps also most underrated of the original wave of seventies progressive rock bands. For many (including Steven) The Power and the Glory from 1974 is their masterpiece. The remix was done from the master tapes at 96/24 and this is the 2 disc Blu-Ray/CD edition on the band’s own label Alucard. Also includes bonus tracks of the non-album title-track (originally released as a single), and an alternate take of Aspirations. The Blu-Ray also includes animated videos for the whole album, and exclusive instrumental mixes.

The group’s first U.S. release in two years featured ornate playing from Kerry Minnear on keyboards and Gary Green’s loudest guitar work up to that time. The Power and the Glory is also a fairly dissonant album, yet it made the charts, albeit pretty low. There seems to be a unifying theme having to do with one’s place in the social order, but it’s very vague in contrast to Pink Floyd’s re-creations of the post-’60s drug experience, Yes’ sweeping album-length suites, and ELP’s sci-fi epics. “No God’s a Man” is an infinitely more challenging piece of music than anything on Jethro Tull’s Aqualung, but that wasn’t a commercial virtue; nor could the electric violin break on “The Face” or the rippling electric guitar passages throughout cover the effort involved in absorbing these songs. The Power and the Glory vaguely resembled Genesis’ early art-rock albums, but without any presence as charismatic as Peter Gabriel. “Playing the Game” and “So Sincere” were the most accessible tracks and ended up as key parts of their concert set. –Bruce Eder

Gestating for a long time — at least two years, although George Michael hasn’t released an album for a decade — Symphonica is a curious way for the pop singer to return to action. A live album recorded on his 2011-2012 tour, Symphonica showcases a singer on the supper club circuit, trading in a few of his big hits, all middle-brow favorites (“Praying for Time,” “One More Try,” “A Different Corner”) and spending a lot of time on songs the audience knows and love, whether it’s Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Anthony Newley’s “Feeling Good,” or the American Popular Songbook standard “My Baby Just Cares for Me.” Michael does indulge in some personal favorites — —he tackles Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Let Her Down Easy” and the deep Elton John track “Idol” — but the context is something familiar: a popular singer luxuriating in a symphonic setting. He doesn’t push the limits of this template, choosing to enjoy the lush surroundings, so this winds up slightly anti-climactic: Michael is in good form but he’s coasting, doing no more than he needs to, satisfying fans without surprising.

Amy Winehouse’s second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out in decades. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she’s taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960’s girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility.

With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, “Rehab” becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it’s echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the trends in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content.

Winehouse’s lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on “You Know I’m No Good,” she’s unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on “Me & Mrs Jones” when she berates a boyfriend with “You made me miss the Slick Rick gig.” Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind in years!

Back To Black took home five 2008 Grammy Awards including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album while Mark Ronson also won for Producer of the Year.

This historic release collects all 20 U.S. singles released by The Doors, and their corresponding B-sides, gathered together for the first time. The set includes the rare, original single versions of such classics as, “Love Me Two Times,” “Love Her Madly,” “Riders On The Storm” and many more. As a bonus, the CD features four original mono radio versions of some of the band’s biggest hits which have never been made available anywhere after being sent to radio stations around their original release. All 44 tracks have been mastered from the original analog single masters by the band’s longtime engineer/mixer Bruce Botnick.

The Blu-ray disc that accompanies the expanded version of THE SINGLES features a high-resolution Quadraphonic mix of The Best Of The Doors. This 11-song compilation, available on Blu-ray for the first time, was remixed specifically for Quad in 1973 and offers a unique sonic experience on songs like “Soul Kitchen,” “Moonlight Drive” and “Love Me Two Times.”

A three-CD + Blu-ray Audio package that comprises the UK mono album plus outtakes, mono singles on mono EPs on the first disc, the UK stereo album plus stereo outtakes and stereo remixes on the second disc, early versions, demos and BBC recordings on the third CD and a 24/96 hi-res version of US mono & stereo albums and bonus tracks on the fourth and final disc which is a Blu-ray Audio.

Fresh Cream represents so many different firsts, it’s difficult to keep count. Cream, of course, was the first supergroup, but their first album not only gave birth to the power trio, it also was instrumental in the birth of heavy metal and the birth of jam rock. That’s a lot of weight for one record and, like a lot of pioneering records, Fresh Cream doesn’t seem quite as mighty as what would come later, both from the group and its acolytes. In retrospect, the moments on the LP that are a bit unformed — in particular, the halting waltz of “Dreaming” never achieves the sweet ethereal atmosphere it aspires to — stand out more than the innovations, which have been so thoroughly assimilated into the vocabulary of rock & roll, but Fresh Cream was a remarkable shift forward in rock upon its 1966 release and it remains quite potent. Certainly at this early stage the trio was still grounded heavily in blues, only fitting given guitarist Eric Clapton’s stint in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, which is where he first played with bassist Jack Bruce, but Cream never had the purist bent of Mayall, and not just because they dabbled heavily in psychedelia. The rhythm section of Bruce and Ginger Baker had a distinct jazzy bent to their beat; this isn’t hard and pure, it’s spongy and elastic, giving the musicians plenty of room to roam. This fluidity is most apparent on the blues covers that take up nearly half the record, especially on “Spoonful,” where the swirling instrumental interplay, echo, fuzz tones, and overwhelming volume constitute true psychedelic music, and also points strongly toward the guitar worship of heavy metal. Almost all the second side of Fresh Cream is devoted to this, closing with Baker’s showcase “Toad,” but for as hard and restless as this half of the album is, there is some lightness on the first portion of the record where Bruce reveals himself as an inventive psychedelic pop songwriter with the tense, colorful “N.S.U.” and the hook- and harmony-laden “I Feel Free.” Cream shows as much force and mastery on these tighter, poppier tunes as they do on the free-flowing jams, yet they show a clear bias toward the long-form blues numbers, which makes sense: they formed to be able to pursue this freedom, which they do so without restraint. If at times that does make the album indulgent or lopsided, this is nevertheless where Cream was feeling their way forward, creating their heavy psychedelic jazz-blues and, in the process, opening the door to all kinds of serious rock music that may have happened without Fresh Cream, but it just would not have happened in the same fashion as it did with this record as precedent. —AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

A quarter of a century after ‘Out Of Time’ helped break alternative music into the American mainstream and turned R.E.M. into a worldwide phenomenon, the band have announced a special 25th Anniversary Edition, out via Concord Bicycle.
‘Out Of Time’ will be released in three different formats. The 2 CD Set will include a remastered version of the original album alongside demo versions of every album track, as well as demos for two non-album b-sides and a previously unreleased song. The 3 LP Set will include remastered vinyl versions of the original album and the demos. The 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of ‘Out Of Time’ will include 4 discs, featuring the remastered album, demos, recordings from the band’s performance at Mountain Stage in 1991 (a rarity for the time, as the band did not tour to promote ‘Out Of Time’), and a Blu-Ray disc with hi-resolution audio and 5.1 Surround Sound versions of ‘Out Of Time,’ all of the music videos from the album, and the 1991 electronic press kit ‘Time Piece,’ featuring in-studio footage, exclusive performances and more. All versions will feature extensive liner notes by Annie Zaleski featuring interviews from all four band members and producers Scott Litt and John Keane. Full details below.

The demos, recorded at John Keane Studio in early 1990 and featured on all versions of the ‘Out Of Time’ reissue, provide key insight into the band’s creative process: from early instrumental passes to versions of “Losing My Religion” and “Texarkana” with different lyrics, and even a version of “Radio Song” that features a rare moment with drummer Bill Berry on lead vocals for a verse. While recording them, it was clear to Keane that R.E.M. were “at their peak in terms of creativity.”
By 1991, R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe) had amassed a sizable following in the United States, but ‘Out Of Time’ brought the Athens, GA band unprecedented global recognition. It was the group’s first album to top both US and UK charts, selling 12 million copies worldwide, and garnered 7 Grammy nominations, including wins for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Short Form Music Video (“Losing My Religion”), and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (“Losing My Religion”).
Instant classic songs like “Losing My Religion,” “Shiny Happy People,” “Near Wild Heaven,” and “Radio Song” broke new ground, artistically and commercially. Reviewing ‘Out Of Time,’ Rolling Stone simply said, “This may well be America’s best rock & roll band.” Earlier this year, Pitchfork called the album “arguably their most important record,” while Time Magazine named ‘Out Of Time’ one of it’s All-Time 100 Albums, saying it contains “ethereal beauty rarely heard on a rock record.”

Skylarking is the fourth in a series of remixed and expanded XTC albums. David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young announce the release of CSNY 1974, the long awaited boxed set from their historic 1974 tour will be available July 7/8. The forty (40) previously unreleased tracks recorded forty (40) years ago will be packaged in several formats and configurations and released July 7 in international territories, and July 8 in the United States. The box set includes all 40 tracks, a 188-page booklet of never before seen tour photos, and a bonus DVD of previously unreleased concert footage; the box is available as a 3CD/DVD set or Pure Audio Blu-Ray (192kHz/24-bit)/DVD set.
Long-rumored and highly anticipated, CSNY 1974 captures the band’s one-of-a-kind harmonic alchemy during its remarkable outdoor stadium tour, a trek that spanned more than two months, and included 31 concerts, in 24 cities, with combined audiences of over a million people. Produced by Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein, the box set mirrors the electric/acoustic/electric format that the band followed each night on stage, representing an idealized version of a show from the tour.
“This project has been the most difficult, yet rewarding work I’ve ever done in my 50 years of recording,” says Graham Nash. “It rekindled the love I have for my partners and the music we have made together.”
The box set includes some of CSNY’s best-known music; songs like “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Helpless,” “Wooden Ships,” and “Teach Your Children.” During the 1974 tour, CSNY also introduced new songs that emerged later on various albums, like Crosby’s “Time After Time,” and Nash’s “Fieldworker. Several songs by Young are previously unreleased, including “Traces,” “Love/Art Blues,” “Goodbye Dick,” and “Hawaiian Sunrise.”
CSNY 1974 will be available from CSNY and Rhino in several different configurations listed below, on July 7/8, nearly 40 years to the date after the tour’s first show on July 9, 1974.

When Lou Reed died on October 27, 2013, most of his obituaries at least paid lip service to his work with The Velvet Underground, though my hunch is most of those writing these epitaphs had never actually heard the band. The Velvet Underground never achieved much commercial success, and yet they are routinely named among the most influential rock bands of all time. A lot of bands experience what’s known in the recording industry as the “sophomore slump”, but The Velvet Underground seemed positively intent on not going gently into that sophomoric night, and 1968’s White Light/White Heat remains one of the most confrontational discs of its era. As The Velvet Underground’s John Cale himself averred, White Light/White Heat was “consciously anti-beauty”. While that may have been at odds with the late sixties flowering of the so-called Love Generation, it certainly is much more in line with what ultimately became movements like punk and grunge, which may be at least one reason why the band’s renown has only grown since the original releases of its albums.

White Light/White Heat is an intentionally noisy album, one which pushed the limits of recording technology at the time and which can’t escape the fact that the band was obsessed with distortion and things like white noise. The album was recorded in a rush of activity, reportedly being finished in barely two days, and that offers a visceral though chaotic view of a group of guys who had divorced themselves from both Andy Warhol and Nico and were almost frenetically searching for a new direction. The album is certainly outré by any standards, including such odd tracks as “The Gift”, which features John Cale reciting a short story while a cacophonous rock solo plays simultaneously. Avant-garde musicians have often cited The Velvet Underground as perfect examples of a so-called rock band refusing to be a prefab cog in an industry machine. It’s that spirit which not only informs White Light/White Heat but continues to propel a lot of what is best about non-traditional contemporary music.

My reviews of these Universal Music Group High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray have become a bit repetitive, but instead of launching into my usual diatribe, may I repeat a quote I’ve used in previous reviews, a quote by that legendary analyst of audio Scooby-Doo: “Rah-roh”. While I haven’t been shy about discussing the debatable decision to use three more or less interchangeable audio codecs on these releases, someone in the QC chain on this particular release had better be updating their resumé, for a really shoddy mistake has been made. As with previous HFPA releases, there is both an LPCM 2.0 (96/24) track streaming at 4.6 Mbps and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (96/24) track, streaming in the high 3’s, but what should be a Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (96/24) track is instead a standard Dolby Digital 2.0 track, despite being listed as a Dolby TrueHD track. How this could have happened is anyone’s guess, but it’s unfortunate, to say the least. This actually is one of the rare releases where I actually preferred the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track over the LPCM 2.0 track; it provides slightly greater clarity in what is often a very noisy and distorted set of tracks, especially in an exceptionally crowded midrange. Stereo separation is exceptional, but neither of the lossless tracks can overcome the limitations of the source elements nor the rushed and pushed engineering of the original recording.

White Light/White Heat is not an “easy” listen, but it’s often viscerally compelling. This is energetic, undeniably angry music that reaches out and grabs the listener by the throat. Once again an HFPA release squanders the “vast storage space” of a Blu-ray disc by not including any supplements, and this release is further marginally hampered by audio that only further reveals the warts of the original recording.
