Fragile was Yes’ breakthrough album, propelling them in a matter of weeks from a cult act to an international phenomenon; not coincidentally, it also marked the point where all of the elements of the music (and more) that would define their success for more than a decade fell into place fully formed. The science-fiction and fantasy elements that had driven the more successful songs on their preceding record, The Yes Album, were pushed much harder here, and not just in the music but in the packaging of the album: the Roger Dean-designed cover was itself a fascinating creation that seemed to relate to the music and drew the purchaser’s attention in a manner that few records since the heyday of the psychedelic era could match. Having thrown original keyboard player Tony Kaye overboard early in the sessions – principally over his refusal to accept the need for the Moog synthesizer in lieu of his preferred Hammond organ – the band welcomed Rick Wakeman into its ranks. His use of the Moog, among other instruments, coupled with an overall bolder and more aggressive style of playing, opened the way for a harder, hotter sound by the group as a whole; bassist Chris Squire sounds like he’s got his amp turned up to “12,” and Steve Howe’s electric guitars are not far behind, although the group also displayed subtlety where it was needed. The opening minute of “Roundabout,” the album opener – and the basis for the edited single that would reach number 13 on the Billboard charts and get the group onto AM radio in a way that most other prog rock outfits could only look upon with envy – was dominated by Howe’s acoustic guitar and Bill Bruford‘s drums, and only in the middle section did the band show some of what they could do with serious amperage. Elsewhere on the record, as on “South Side of the Sky,” they would sound as though they were ready to leave the ground (and the planet), between the volume and intensity of their playing. “Long Distance Runaround,” which also served as the B-side of the single, was probably the most accessible track here apart from “Roundabout,” but they were both ambitious enough to carry most listeners on to the heavier sides at the core of this long player. The solo tracks by the members were actually a necessity: they needed to get Fragile out in a hurry to cover the cost of the keyboards that Wakeman had added to the group’s sonic arsenal. But they ended up being more than filler. Each member, in effect, took a “bow” in mostly fairly serious settings, and Squire’s “The Fish” and Howe’s “Mood For a Day” pointed directly to future, more substantial projects as well as taking on a life of their own on-stage. If not exactly their peak, Fragile was as perfect a record as the group would ever make, and just as flawless in its timing as its content.

A tragedy from Sweden, a joke from Ireland, a lament from Scotland, a life well lived from America. The musicians of Ensemble Galilei have brought together a repertoire unparalleled in breadth, and they perform these pieces with unfettered virtuosity. Borders crossed, genres bent, new approaches to old music, this CD is unbelievably compelling as a work of art, rapturously accessible as a piece of music. Carolyn Surrick explains: “Sue brought “Miss Abbott,” a tune she wrote years ago for her mother and I brought “Uti Dahlin,” a Swedish song sung by my great-grandmother to her children. Jackie brought “Amy’s” and “Sophie’s Slip Jig,” the first a tune written for his wife, the second for his daughter. I wrote “Lindsay’s Keys” for my dear friends’ wedding and “Ginger’s,” a chant for strength and faith. I first heard “Innerståfrid’n (Innermost Peace),” and “Vals efter ‘Jonte i Byom” at Walter Reed, not always a place for cheery, upbeat music. These tunes perfectly express a solemn, soulful, reflection of a world where goodness does not always triumph and darkness is not a curse. There are storied histories to the other tunes – Ryan’s long and deep love of Scottish music made manifest in the “Sitting on the Stern of the Boat” set, Isaac and his pipe set from Ireland, Kathryn Montoya’s perfect partnership with Jackie on “John Come Kiss Me Now,” and the Telemann and Marais, pieces for the gamba that have been a part of my life for more than thirty years.”

Founded in 1990, Ensemble Galilei is an ensemble of players from both classical and Celtic backgrounds, playing Irish and Scottish airs and dance tunes, early and medieval music, and original compositions. This recording features Isaac Alderson (uilleann pipes, Irish flute, whistle), Ryan McKasson (fiddle), Kathryn Montoya (baroque oboe and recorder), Jackie Moran (drums, percussion, banjo, vocals), Sue Richards (Celtic harp), and Carolyn Surrick (viola da gamba). The Ensemble takes their name and inspiration from the life of composer Vincenzo Galilei, whose influence, some four hundred years ago, helped restore a vital element of passion to the music of the day. The Ensemble infuses ancient music with a spirit of improvisation and liveliness. To achieve their unique Celtic sound, Ensemble Galilei has melded the elegance of chamber music with the energy and excitement of traditional music. An intricate blend of instruments grants listeners passage to another world, evoking musical images of the ancient Celts and bringing these images to life for today’s audiences. They have performed and toured globally for almost twenty-five years, and have been featured on multiple recordings and radio performances. They have notably collaborated with National Geographic in the documentary “First Person: Stories from the Edge of the World” and with the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit for “First Person: Seeing America.”

Upon its release more than four decades ago, Exile on Main Street wove varying musical genres, instruments, and artists into a compelling masterpiece. The original 18-track double-album was famously recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richards’ mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles, where the literal ‘Main Street’ influenced the album’s title.

The atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album’s outcome, itself highly reflective and influenced by the socio-political turbulence that marked the late 60s and early 70s. As detected throughout Exile, The Stones nixed the flower-child era’s influences and directed their creative process with an edgier, excessive, “more is more” approach. Consequently, Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres peppered with blues, country, R&B, and gospel, all mixed with lyrics that fervently demand release and liberation.

The album also called on an electric array of talent, including Dr. John, the late Billy Preston, and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Guitarist Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones in the band shortly before the latter died in 1969, brings his fervent intensity and bluesy elegance to the table to go along with Richards’ landmark riffs. Due to the confluence of chemistry, personnel, circumstances, and songs, there is no other album in history that sounds like Exile on Main Street.

In the early romantic period, struggling with the aftermath of absolutism’s collapse, people had to find new solutions in all realms of communal life. Because old certainties vanished, another vision of society emerged, shaped by artists: poets, painters and musicians. They viewed a higher world order in nature, to be felt by the individual, and expressed in a synthesis of all arts. Especially in music, these ideas were embodied with a new freedom of stylistic decisions. The sonatas for natural horn and fortepiano by Franz Danzi, Ferdinand Ries und Nikolaus von Krufft are virtuosic compositions with stunning dialogues between the horn and piano parts. They explore the full range of timbres, flamboyantly surpassing classical structures in search of new modes of expression. The verve and profusion of colors in the performance of Steinar Granmo Nilsen and Kristin Fossheim incorporate the early romantic idea that music was the most royal of all arts.

Since the early twentieth century there has been a radical renewal of pedigreed chamber genres. We need only think of the late sonatas of Debussy, or of the string quartets of Bartók; or, to enter a high modernist space later in the century, of the duos and quartets of Elliott Carter; or, to move into a less prescriptive space that some like to label postmodern, of Ståle Kleiberg in our own time. In the solo and chamber works recorded here, Kleiberg recaptures something of the ethos of the private sphere. The solo works have an inward character, occluding display, while the chamber works restore the thematic sharing and instrumental characterization of the classical era, but in both cases of an informal kind, shy of system, wary of rhetoric.
Ståle Kleiberg is a major Norwegian composer with a considerable international reputation. The works on this album represent a lesser-known, but valuable, part of his output. His innovatory approach, formal command and technical mastery are especially apparent in his chamber music oeuvre, and it is gratifying to be able to present the following selection here: String Quartet No. 2, Ruf und Nachklang, Ashes, Piano Trio No. 2, Sonata for Violin and Cello and Sonanza e cadenza.

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge is marking two milestones this year: the 500th anniversary of the completion of its great chapel and the 400th anniversary of the posthumous publication of Giovanni Gabrieli’s magisterial music for St Mark’s, Venice in the Symphoniae Sacrae. By way of celebration, King’s has used the latest Dolby Atmos technology – favoured by Hollywood – to mix and release this disc, the first classical album to do so, apparently, and in CD/SACD hybrid and Pure Audio Blu-ray formats.

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, release the next disc in their own-label catalogue, 1615: Gabrieli in Venice, on 30 October 2015. The disc is also the first album of any genre ever to use Dolby’s new Atmos technology.

A culmination of considerable scholarship into the performance practices of Gabriel’s Venice, this recording presents a selection of works from the composer’s posthumously published collections from 1615. Giovanni Gabrieli’s distinctively antiphonal compositional style proves perfect for the Dolby Atmos surround sound technology, which is able to reproduce the acoustics of the Chapel with unprecedented realism. 2015 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of this collection of Gabrieli’s works from 1615, as well as the 500th anniversary of the completion of King’s College Chapel.

Conducted by the choir’s Music Director, Stephen Cleobury, the Choir is accompanied by two organs and His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts (Jeremy West, Director), each work calling for a different combination of the male voices and instruments. Large-scale settings include In ecclesiis, Iubilate Deo and the Magnificat and contrast with smaller settings including three brass-only Canzona.

Idlewild South, the sophomore album from the Allman Brothers Band, while not a huge success in 1970, is now considered one of the band’s best and was included in a Rolling Stone survey as one of the 40 most groundbreaking albums of all time. For Simon Rattle, Jean Sibelius is “one of the most staggeringly original composers that there is”. And indeed, this music has a unique musical language whose many beauties are particularly succinctly conveyed in Sibelius’s seven symphonies. There is sonorous warmth as much as there is austere Nordic folklore. Moreover, there is a conceptual boldness that takes the listener on exciting musical journeys of discovery. In 2015, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’s birth, Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker presented the cycle live, which was met with unanimous delight by audiences and critics alike. “The Philharmoniker show that with them and Simon Rattle, Sibelius is in excellent hands,” wrote the Berliner Zeitung, “because the orchestra has that astringency and sheer power which is so important for this kind of music.”

Simon Rattle was familiar with the music of Jean Sibelius from childhood. When, as a ten-year-old, he heard the Fifth Symphony live for the first time, it struck him – to use his own words – “like a thunderbolt”. The Berliner Philharmoniker can also look back on a long Sibelius tradition and the orchestra was conducted by the composer himself in 1902. However, the first complete performance of the seven symphonies was not realised until 2010 under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, with the Third Symphony being performed by the Philharmoniker for the first time. For many music lovers in Berlin, this new encounter with Sibelius was an exhilarating experience, and so it was only natural to repeat the performance of the cycle in Sibelius’s anniversary year.

The complete recording of the symphonies is now being released in an exclusive edition. The edition presents the symphonies not only on 4 CDs, but also on two Blu-ray discs as HD video, in uncompressed audio resolution and DTS surround sound. The extensive product features include a comprehensive booklet and an hour-long video interview in which Sir Simon Rattle talks about his views on Sibelius and introduces the seven symphonies.

In the world of rock there are recordings that truly resonate in historical importance and continue to cast an enduring shadow of influence. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is one of the most steadfastly revered musical treasures of its era. Its famous title track is still hailed as an essential rock guitar anthem, a signature tune of rock’s leading guitar hero, Eric Clapton.

Recorded in 1970 by Derek and the Dominos, the group was comprised of Clapton and top American musicians Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs music offers a timeless blend of rock, electric blues and Southern gospel influences that has shaped generations of roots-oriented musicians.

Derek and the Dominos came together at a very special time and place, riding a late ‘60s wave of interest in roots music and blues-based rock and roll. In 1969, Clapton found inspiration playing in the loose, family-like structure of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, an American, R&B-influenced entourage whose 1969 U.K. tour hit the British music scene with seismic proportion.

Despite the tongue-in-cheek, spontaneously chosen name, Derek and the Dominos represented a sincere effort to recreate the friendly, leaderless vibe and easy, groove-driven sound Clapton had enjoyed in ’69. The foursome originally featured Delaney and Bonnie’s rhythm section, keyboardist/vocalist Whitlock, bassist Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, plus Clapton on vocals and guitars. They first came together in late spring of 1970, developing their sound while performing on George Harrison’s breakthrough solo album, All Things Must Pass (their studio jams pushed the album to a three-disc package.) That June, Derek and the Dominos premiered publicly in London. By August they began recording their debut album at Criteria Studios in Miami, with legendary producer Tom Dowd in the control room.

Layla and Other Love Songs, the double-album that Derek and the Dominos recorded over the next 6 weeks showcased the creative singing and songwriting axis formed by Clapton and the Memphis-born Whitlock, who had grown up around the city’s legendary Stax Studios. The confluence of their respective experiences, British blues-rock and Southern American R&B, generated a number of gospel-inflected tunes that featured their intertwined voices harmonizing much in the fashion of a rock-world Sam & Dave, and are among the most representative and covered tunes of that era: “Anyday,” “Keep On Growing,” “Tell the Truth,” “I Looked Away” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Bad.”

The sessions also saw the rare coming together of Clapton and Duane Allman: two blues-rock specialists from different sides of the Atlantic. That happened when the Allman Brothers Band, then just breaking into mainstream popularity, performed in Miami on the second night of the recording sessions. The musical encounter resulted in a night full of studio jams, followed by the inclusion of Allman’s guitar on most of the album, including standout duels on such blues numbers as “Key To The Highway” and “Have You Ever Loved a Woman?” and the double slide-guitar workout that defines the famous piano coda section of “Layla.”

Clapton’s profound adoration of the American blues tradition, in all of its forms and styles, is one of the most prominent threads in the musical tapestry that is Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. His choice of blues-based tunes to cover on the album stretches from “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” (made famous by Bessie Smith in 1923) and “Key to the Highway” (associated with Big Bill Broonzy, from 1940) to Chuck Willis’ plaintive R&B ballad “It’s Too Late” (1956), Freddie King’s “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” (1960), and Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” (1967).

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs achieved gold-album status within months of its release in late 1970, was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000, and today remains a ubiquitous entry in various “Top 100” and “All-Time Greatest” polls, and “Must Hear” lists.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the album that turned Elton John into a true superstar. Although he was already known in 1973 due to the growing success of his previous albums – including Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, Elton John and Honky Chateau – it was the release of this double album that made Elton a household name, going on to sell a staggering 31-million copies. Goodbye… perfectly marries the various elements of Elton’s craft: classic songwriting, glam stomp, R&B, gospel, jaw-dropping performances, soul and a large helping of brilliant showmanship.

The album spent eight weeks at No.1 and went platinum seven times over in the U.S. It also contains Elton and co-writer Bernie Taupin’s most successful song, “Candle in the Wind”; a No.1 hit three times, in three different versions, in three successive decades, ultimately becoming the biggest-selling single of all time. It also features dynamite standards such as “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” and “Bennie and the Jets,” the latter being the song that led to Elton becoming the first white performer to appear on the influential American R&B TV show Soul Train. The album is also ranked No. 91 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “Top 100 Greatest Albums Of All Time” chart. In a career filled with highlights that other artists can only dream of, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road stands as a towering achievement, a defining moment in the most exciting era in rock history.

Often referred to as the pinnacle of Elton and co-writer Bernie Taupin’s creative powers and commercial success, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the eighth studio album the pair had released in a three-year period. But the recording of the album wasn’t the smoothest of experiences. After initial attempts at recording in Kingston, Jamaica, were derailed by the double whammy of industrial action at the studio and further disruption was caused by a world boxing title fight in the town, Elton and the band returned to the familiar settings of Chateau d’Herouville. The album was completed in a staggering seventeen days (including mixing!) and the result is a body of work of huge ambition – kicking off with the grandiose, epic prog rock sound of “Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding,” and effortlessly segueing between pop, hard rock, soul, and stunning heart-wrenching ballads.

The album artwork was also a giant leap forward creatively for Elton. Whereas earlier album artwork either didn’t feature Elton at all, or showed him as an earnest early 70’s songwriter, here he can been seen resplendent in sparkling platform boots, a satin bomber jacket and, of course, his soon-to-be trademark flamboyant eyewear. The sight of him stepping from an unglamorous normal street into a magical fantasy world is not only a metaphor for the transition he was going through as an artist but is one of the most defining images of early 1970’s rock music.

Every soundboard quality recording known to exist is presented with audio fully restored, all released on CD for the first time. There are also five complete concerts, drawn from multi-track recordings, alongside the restored audio bootleg of the band’s final show from New York and a new stereo mix of Red by Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson undertaken in 2012. a total of 16 concerts are featured across 20 discs, with the studio Red as the 21st CD. The set also features: A DVD containing a high resolution stereo presentation of USA (in all mixes) and the new stereo mix of Red 2 Blu-ray discs containing the five full length multi-track concert recordings (newly transferred at the highest resolution available from the original analogue Dolby SR source mix-down tapes & presented in 24/192 DTS-HD master sound), new & original stereo versions of Red and the existing 5.1 multi-channel mixes of the album presented in 24/96 DTS-HD also feature on Blu-ray.

Credo by Hélène Grimaud is one of the most effectively sequenced discs ever released. And is Grimaud and Salonen’s Pärt Credo anything but a metaphor for life itself: mostly boring, sometimes unbearable, and occasionally very beautiful? Decca recorded Turandot with by no means obvious casting Joan Sutherland as the icy Princess and Zubin Mehta on the podium. It became the Turandot of modern times and, of course, gave us the Nessun dorma that became Pavarotti s signature aria during the World Cup 1990 festivities. With Montserrat Caballé as a heart-melting Liù, this is a recording that has not been equalled in the decades since.
The glory years of the 1980s and 90s when Pavarotti had become a true superstar lay ahead, but this recording contains some infinitely treasurable singing Pavarotti was a celebrity who d earned his fame, and learned his craft slowly and completely. He was indeed grandissimo in every way.

The world’s most famous tenor performs the world’s most famous tenor aria, Nessun dorma, on this 1972 recording of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot. It became Luciano Pavarotti’s signature aria: he performed it at his final concert. Pavarotti even managed a hit single on the charts with this recording in 1990 when it was used on the BBC’s World Cup telecasts. The aria charted again in 2007 after this version was played at his funeral. In addition to Pavarotti, the star-studded recording features Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé, Nicolai Ghiaurov, conductor Zubin Mehta and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Calaf, the son of the exiled Tartar king Timur, answers all the questions easily and when Turandot hesitates to accept him, magnanimously offers her a riddle in return – ‘What is his name?’. Liù, Calaf’s faithful slave-girl, is tortured but rather than reveal his identity kills herself. Turandot finally capitulates, announcing that his name is Love. Dame Joan Sutherland’s assumption of the title role is statuesque, combining regal poise with a more human warmth, while Montserrat Caballé is a touchingly sympathetic Liù, skilfully steering the character away from any hint of the mawkish. Pavarotti’s Calaf is a heroic figure in splendid voice and the chorus is handled with great power, baying for blood at one minute, enraptured with Liù’s nobility at the next.
